Spunky
I worked on the Spunky fiber last night and finished the first bobbin. The fiber is nice but the colors are so not me. I hope that when the yarn is done more of the blue will come through. Here is what the fiber looked like again in case you missed it.

Now here is the single.

For me the orangey color takes over too much but we will see when it is plied cause that could change everything. I still think this fiber of the month club is great as the fiber is really nice and I knew that not every month would be my favorite color-wise but it is still fun to do. My mom loved the fiber and the colors are much more "her" so maybe I will make something out of it for her.
I also have a request for a hat "like the one I saw in the fishing store''. It is basically a beany style hat but it comes down lower in the back and has modified ear flaps. This is the drawing.
Do you think that a basic ear flap design hat would work but with a few modifications? They always seem to have ties on the ends of the flaps and he does not want any so would they still stay down? Any ear flap hat experts or wearers out there want to comment on this.

Ooo, I like the yarn! But then, I'm partial to oranges with my blues...
Would the Elizabeth Zimmerman Ganomy or Maltese Fishereman's hat work (Knitter's Almanac, June.) Also, Interweave knits had a Brioche Stitch hat with modified earflaps a few issues back (let me find it... digging madly...) Yes, it was Fall 2005, and it was called "Brioche Helmet Hat." Though it's only sized for children, I don't think it would be hard to size up. They mention the particular earflap-sans-ties issue.
Hope it helps!

I actually like the colorway! I hope the blues come out more when you ply. It actually makes me think of Arizona. Even though I've never been there! Your singles are always so perfect! Have no help for you about the hat....wish I did....hope you find the pattern!

The brioche hat is what immediately came to mind to me as well, but I do know of another pattern like that. It's the felted sherpa hat in Knit Hats! You could use the same proportions to knit up an adult hat. Basically they suggest keeping a ratio of 2/5 the stitches in the back between the earflaps as compared to the front. For a worsted weight hat, about 20 stitches are necessary to cover the ears (discussed this the other night at my S'NB), but because of the shaping you would probably need more. HTH some.
